Arlington History

Arlington, Texas has an infamous history, home to many firsts, and has a long history of innovation. This growing city isn’t the same as it was 100 years ago or even 10! Take a look back and see how far we’ve come and how we got here.

Arlington history goes way back, as in waaay back to the dinosaurs. The Arlington Archosaur Site has uncovered 2,000 individual fossils since 2008 and excavation continues today. It’s one of the few major fossil excavations in an urban setting, even the dinosaurs knew Arlington was the place to be!

Known as the “Vegas before Vegas,” Top O’ Hill Terrace was a secret hub for gambling, drinking and all things scandalous in the 20s and 30s. Attracting high-rollers from famous to infamous, like John Wayne, Mae West, Frank Sinatra, and Bonnie and Clyde, the illicit casino had a tea room that served as a cover. Get a guided tour and explore the underground tunnels used to escape police raids.

O.S Gray Nature Area
Just to the west of the University of Texas at Arlington is 20 acres that was once a nursery founded by Oscar “O.S.” Gray, who is considered one of the greatest pecan tree breeders and nursery operators in the Southwest. Started in 1926, the nursery operated for more than five decades at that location.

Randol Mill Community Park
According to the Texas Historical Commission, the original mill was built in 1856 by Archibald Leonard and served as a community center and county voting place. The original mill was burned to the ground in 1860, but reopened in 1862. The mill changed owners many times, but eventually was owned by Randol until his death in 1922. While the mill burned again in 1933 and was not rebuilt, the park honoring Randol’s mill, and the community spirit it embodied, flourishes today. It features a baseball and softball complex, basketball courts, concrete and nature trails, a family aquatic center, fishing ponds, playgrounds, and tennis courts.

Village Creek Historial Park
Archaeological excavations along Village Creek unearthed evidence of several prehistoric villages. Artifacts from the area date back almost 9,000 years and represent a culture of food-gatherers and hunters. In the 1830s, the valley held one of the largest concentrations of Native Americans in the region. Village Creek was named because of the Native American villages along its banks.
